Description

Product Name: 19th c. "1000 Butterfly" shipping Plate - China - 1870-1880 - 5"

Exquisitely hand-painted, late 19th c., "1000-Butterfly" plate in overglaze enamel.
There have been endless copies and reproductions of this motif created in the early 20th century due to its popularity.
However, this specific plate is a fully authrentic original from the 19th century whose craftsmanship has never been matched in later renditions.

Accordingly to Chinese tradition, butterflies are an auspicious sign. They convey a wish for longevity, and were therefore often used to decorate birthday gifts or lanterns given during the Autumn Moon Festival: on the 15th day of the 8th month of the lunar calendar (usually around September).

Encircling the entire rim of the plate is a dense depiction of butterflies and insects with a swarm of various butterflies making up shipping the center medallion. The lobed rim is Intricately detailed in gold. Gold gilt is also reflected in each individual butterfly against a range of different gradated color schemes per every set of wings, creating a visual feast for the eyes.

It is in exceptionally fine condition for its age. It exhibits no cracks, chips or hairlines. There are a few instances of soiling, which can be carefully removed.
